How to fix your broken security shutters

Security roller shutters are one of the most effective solutions for protecting a business. So if they become damaged or broken, it is important to diagnose the problem and get them fixed straight away. The main common problems are listed below.

Security shutters won’t open or shut

A common problem with a broken security shutter is when it won’t open or shut completely. Firstly, you should check whether the power for the shutter is switched on. There may be a light that indicates this. If you have switched on the power but it still fails to work try switching the power off and on a few times or checking that the fuse box has not blown.

Security shutters only go halfway

Most security roller shutters contain many sensors that control the opening and closing mechanisms. If these sensors become dirty or get knocked and become uneven they can begin to malfunction leading to your security shutters only opening or shutting halfway. You will need to check whether your sensors are clean, aligned, or structurally damaged. If you discover that they are structurally damaged, you may need to seek professional maintenance help.

Overheating

Security shutters, particularly commercial roller shutters, are often in constant, heavy usage. This can lead to overheating and breakdown. If this has happened to your security roller shutters then you should stop using them for a while to give them time to cool down and recalibrate.

Lack of lubrication

Sometimes security shutters can begin to stick or make an irritating scraping noise when opening and shutting. This often indicates a lubrication issue and is easily fixed. You can spray WD40 on the rails of the security roller shutters which should quickly resolve the problem.

Broken electrics

Depending on how your security shutters are operated, broken electrics could be the issue. If your security shutters are battery-operated, you should check to see if the batteries are dead and whether they need replacing. If they are mains operated and the power supply is not faulty, then the problem could be to do with the connecting electrics which may have been damaged through the habitual use of the security shutters.

Poor overall security shutter condition

It may be that the overall condition of your shutters is the problem. Commercial roller shutters are often in regular use by many different vehicles which can cause accidental cracks and dents. While minor dings won’t make a difference to overall performance, anything major will need to be fixed by a security shutter professional.
