A Helpful Guide to Different Security Barrier Systems

Sep 10, 2024

Automatic gate barriers are an effective way to keep unwanted and unauthorised visitors from using your private car park. Not only do they restrict vehicles from entering, but they still allow for easy and convenient access to those who are authorised to enter.

When considering having security barriers installed at your place of business, one of the things you’ll want to think about as part of this is the type of access control system you want to be implemented within this.

We’ll discuss three of the most popular of these systems below, exploring how they operate and the advantages of each, so that you can make an informed decision on which may be most suitable for your requirements.

Keypad Systems

As their name suggests, keypad systems use a keypad to control access over car park barriers. These are often installed in front of security barriers on the driver’s side of a vehicle, so that anyone gaining access can open their window and enter the code into the keypad without having to exit the vehicle. Other solutions, however, feature the keypad on the barrier itself.

There can be single, multiple, temporary and permanent codes that can be used to operate the barrier and offer access to the premises, making these a great versatile solution.

Intercom Systems

If you want a solution that allows you to control access to your car park from inside your premises, then intercom systems may be more suitable to you.

These feature a speaker and microphone that allows visitors to speak to a designated operator inside your building in order to request the barrier be opened, which can then be decided by the designated operator.

This is particularly useful when visitors or delivery drivers need access to the premises, as they can easily be allowed access just like unauthorised visitors can easily be refused.

ANPR Systems

Arguably one of the most popular and recent solutions out of all three options, automatic number plate recognition - more commonly known as ANPR - systems use special cameras that can read and recognise a vehicle’s number plate, which it then compares with a list of number plates registered on its database.

If the number plate of the vehicle trying to gain access matches one of those in the database, then the barrier will raise. Number plates can also be entered into the database on both a temporary and permanent database and can be removed at any time, making this a highly convenient and versatile access solution.
